Principal’s Desk

with enough satisfaction I am writing this foreword to our new prospectus for the academic session 2013-2014. Our college Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya has completed another eventful year ( 2012-2013) in its journey to achieve academic excellence. What is most heartwarming is that this college has emerged as an important academic destination in the district of south 24 Parganas. Located at the doorstep of the mega city Kolkata the Rajpur Sonarpur region is now an important academic hub. While our college offers BA, BSc, B.Com honours and general courses there are now colleges of engineering and technology, management teacher’s training and so on within the jurisdiction of Sonarpur police station. However, being the oldest degree college of this locality this college can boast for its past where popular movement in favour of its foundation and generous donations from the inhabitants of the neighbourhood facilitated the birth of a centre of higherlearning,

Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya. We have a dedicated group of highly qualified teachers and an efficient and hardworking band of office staff who shoulder the whole burden of teaching and management of this institution. However, it goes without saying that students are our main asset and whose performance in the university examinations is satisfactory. It has to be mentioned that Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya is the destination of aspiring students not only from the locality but also from the remote parts of the Sundarban region. Therefore, a constant inflow of students is visible at the time of admission.

We have taken initiatives to engage students besides, academics in the field of social service by opening a unit of National Service Scheme( NSS), another proposal to start a NCC unit has been forwarded to the office of the Eastern Command in order to develop a physical culture among our learners. Then again, it is our mission to help out students coming from backward communities and poor family background. Therefore, for their benefit a remedial coaching session would start from this academic year. All said and done, the challenge before higher education is certainly a dichotomy between quantity and quality and the right path is to strike a balance. Lastly, I express my gratitude to the members of our governing body for their assistance and encouragement in running this college. Best wishes to all students, colleagues and guardians.
